The High Cost of "Cheap" Website Design and SEO: A Guide in Times of Confusion PART 1

There's an old adage: "You get what you pay for." It's a common saying that has become such a cliché that some people tend to forget that it's usually true (but not always). Here's another quote, which may or may not be helpful: "Anyone who lives within his means suffers from a lack of imagination." That's from Oscar Wilde.

So... what's the point, you might wonder? My point is that saving money is often a good thing; however, by choosing a web design firm or SEO for your business website, you could be doing yourself a disservice if you choose based solely on price.

Put simply: If you're looking for a website that's designed to convert visitors into paying customers or leads, and you're betting on search engine optimization to attract targeted visitors, there's no point in taking shortcuts.

In fact, choosing a low-cost solution can often cost more in the long run.

So how do you choose? Well, chances are you are not a web designer or SEO professional and that is why you are looking to hire an expert. So it's understandable that you probably don't know what separates a good company from a bad one.

Here's what you need to know.

Not all estimates are equal

Every day, companies like yours are looking for a quote on website design or SEO, or both. While you may have provided your requirements, what you get in estimates can vary drastically from company to company. What is and is not included in the proposal may be different from estimate to estimate. If you select a web developer based solely on final price, you could end up paying more for your website and online marketing.

Think of it as if you were building a house.

A builder's quote does not include door handles. Another builder's proposal is missing a bedroom. Another listing has all the low-end finishes, while another includes everything custom. The finished products would be drastically different, at drastically different costs.

At the end of the day, what are you looking for?

Set up your requirements parameters and then review each estimate with the company to ensure that your web development requirements will be met in the finished product.

What to look for

When you set the parameters, you can make better apples-to-apples comparisons. The following elements are not offered by all web designers, but are part of a good SEO website design program:

  • Creating content (determining who will provide it)

Warning Signs

You should never guarantee organic search results; If placement results are promised in a listing, you should consider this a red flag.

Also, any mention of proprietary tricks of the trade should ring your warning bells.

Not all SEO is really SEO

SEO is common in web development quotes these days. For many businesses, the SEO process involves simply installing a plugin like Yoast and then auto-filling titles, descriptions, and keywords.

You are likely to save a lot of money by selecting a company that does SEO this way. But your site may never rank for the high-quality, high-traffic keyword phrases that could serve up the majority of your potential customers.

Even the most experienced SEO companies will vary in their SEO process; however, a well-developed SEO strategy takes time to execute properly; It's a long-term goal, and a variety of elements build on top of each other for eventual success. In general, SEO should start with a query and keyword research, which will then form the basis for the website's architecture. SEO is not a plugin once website design is complete.

SEO plays an important role in the quality of your website content. Ongoing management and maintenance involves regularly reviewing website analytics and then making any necessary adjustments based on the results.

You can't get over the fact that SEO takes time to achieve results. Not implementing a proper SEO strategy will cost you potential clients in the long run.

Think of it this way: an experienced SEO company may charge an upfront fee and monthly maintenance, while advising you that it can take anywhere from six months to a year to see the best results; So instead, you choose the web development company that promises SEO is included in the price. They tell you that they have chosen keywords and optimized your website. One year later, his website is still underperforming. By that time, you realize you need a more experienced and specialized SEO company. Again, they tell you that it could take anywhere from six months to a year to start seeing results. So now you're looking at the two years since you started before you started reaping the benefits of SEO.

Don't give up though. Most of the good, targeted leads come from organic search, so having a well-defined SEO strategy is the way to success.
